International Women’s Day is a moment to celebrate women’s achievements — and to reflect on where greater equity is still needed. One critical area is mental health. Women experience mental health conditions differently, influenced by biological factors, social roles, trauma, caregiving responsibilities, and systemic inequities. At CAMH, the WomenMind program exists to ensure these realities are recognized in research, care, and treatment.
Why Women’s Mental Health Needs a Specialized Focus
Women are more likely to experience certain mental health conditions, including mood and anxiety disorders.
Hormonal transitions (puberty, pregnancy, postpartum, menopause) can significantly impact mental health.
Experiences such as gender-based violence, caregiving stress, and discrimination increase mental health risks.
Historically, mental health research and treatment have not always reflected women’s lived experiences.
This gap is exactly what WomenMind aims to address.

What Is WomenMind?
WomenMind is a CAMH initiative focused on advancing women’s mental health through:
Gender-responsive research
Specialized clinical care
Knowledge sharing and education
Advocacy for equity in mental health systems
By centering women in mental health innovation, WomenMind helps ensure care is more effective, inclusive, and evidence-based.
The Impact of WomenMind
Improving understanding of how mental illness affects women differently
Supporting treatments that reflect women’s biological and social realities
Informing best practices that benefit not only women, but families and communities as a whole
When mental health care works better for women, it strengthens outcomes across generations.
Why This Matters on International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day is about more than recognition — it’s about action. Supporting women’s mental health is a powerful way to move toward equity, dignity, and wellbeing for all. Programs like WomanMind remind us that investing in women’s mental health is essential, not optional.
This International Women’s Day, we celebrate the work being done to better understand and support women’s mental health. Learn more about WomenMind and how CAMH continues to lead the way in compassionate, research-driven care for women.
